Pro Tips - Advice From Sync Music Professionals About
Marketing Your Music

From relationships with other songwriters and musicians to relationships with music publishers, A&R executives at record labels worldwide, and music supervisors, your relationships form the foundation of access to key information that can advance your career. Invest in these relationships – but be your genuine self as a relationship is only as good as the energy, integrity and trust that you put into it.

Building your craft and community are the two most important ways to create success in the music business. To build your craft and find avenues for getting your music out into the world, it is imperative that you build a circle of trusted colleagues that you can learn from and grow with. Sometimes even the word “networking” gives people anxiety. However it can also be the easiest and most enjoyable part of the business.
—Nitanee Paris, Award-winning Songwriter, Partner/Director of A&R, ArtistMax

Develop a way to communicate with the rest of the world. Address client needs for high- quality tracks that are clean (original/authentic, well-defined ownership, no re-titling, no risk of copyright infringements, etc.), user-friendly, and easy to customize. Understand how your music holds or elevates feelings, moods, and emotionally tells a story.

Push yourself out of your comfort zone and talk to new people. The bar and the café are good places to meet other songwriters at conventions.

The biggest mistakes I made were fear-based and the poisonous practice of comparing my insides with others’ outsides. I talked with an enormously talented 22 year old a couple of days ago who admitted to me that she often felt like she was ‘too old’ and a ‘failure.’ It would be funny—if it weren’t heartbreaking. As long as you’re breathing, it’s not too late.
—Michael A. Levine, Curator, Mpath

Follow-up is key part of being a professional. Meet deadlines, reply to emails, return phone calls and try to anticipate what might be needed ahead of time. You have to be patient and put in the hours. Stay focused and inspired. Prioritize and protect your writing time from distractions.
—Brian Thomas Curtin, Composer/Songwriter, Eaglestone Music

Nothing gets done if you wait for it – you must grab everything you need but honor and respect what you “grab” along the way.  Put in the work as nothing comes easy – practice doesn’t make perfect, practice makes your reality.
—Michael Eames, President, PEN Music Group, Inc.

Get your head around your vision: Where are you now with your music and how does that translate into sync placements? Where do you see yourself in five years? How are you going to get there? Channel your creative inspiration fully into your music and keep a watchful eye on where it goes. The more you feed your vision, the more likely that you’ll get where you want to go.

There are so many song writing festivals, expos, camps and workshops available all over the world these days, and I would recommend checking them all out online. Just do your research and try out as many as you can afford to attend. You don’t even have to leave your room to take part, you can attend online classes and meet other songwriters from around the world. There is so much at your fingertips now that wasn’t there when I was a budding songwriter and these are real opportunities where you can meet new collaborators and network with music professionals to help you on your way.
